McJUNK

Started in 2001, McJunk is an ongoing photographic project with no set outcome in mind. What began purely as a response that documented the increasing amount of McDonald’s litter I happened upon in urban, country, and coastal locations alike, has developed over time into a visual investigation into the relationship between graphic design and disposable culture. The more the project has grown, the more McDonald's litter has formed a visual meme in my mind that has come to raise questions about graphic design's wider societal responsibilities.

Since its inception, McJunk has been exhibited on a gallery floor, included as part of a collaborative postcard project, and published as a Flickr set. At the turn of 2011, McJunk surpassed 500 images and has subsequently been published as a hardback book containing 67 full colour prints and accompanying essay. The publication of this book is intended to be a visual contribution to the wider debate about graphic design practice and contexts.
